PhonePe has clarified that its inactivity charges apply only to dormant wallet balances and will not impact users' bank accounts or UPI transactions.
A notification from PhonePe recently left many users puzzled and in some cases, worried. Social media quickly filled with questions from people wondering whether the digital payments giant had started charging customers simply for not using the app.
PhonePe has now stepped in to clear the confusion.
The company clarified that the inactivity charges apply only to unused PhonePe Wallet balances and have no impact on linked bank accounts or regular UPI transactions. In other words, users who rely on PhonePe for QR-code payments, money transfers, or bill payments through UPI need not worry about money being deducted from their bank accounts.
The confusion stemmed from notifications sent to some customers regarding dormant wallets. Many assumed that inactivity on the app itself could trigger charges. However, PhonePe explained that a wallet and a UPI-linked bank account are separate payment instruments, and activity on one does not necessarily count as activity on the other.
The company also emphasized that wallet balances will never turn negative. Users are notified 15 days in advance before any fee is deducted, giving them enough time to reactivate, withdraw eligible funds, or close the wallet altogether.
The episode highlights a broader challenge facing fintech companies: explaining increasingly complex financial products to millions of users who often view digital payment apps as a single service.
For PhonePe, the clarification is less about fees and more about restoring trust. As digital payments become second nature, transparency around how these products work is becoming just as important as convenience itself.
